My latest assignment had me traveling to the Assateague State Park in Maryland to photograph the Beach Captain of the Park’s Surf Rescue Team. In anticipation of the throngs of beachgoers that flock to the park each summer, I was hired to direct a public service ad (PSA) to educate the public about the first aid and rescue services available, and to highlight the rescue teams’ front man.
The Captain, Sheldon Dawson, or Shelly as he is known here, patrols the beach in his highly visible rescue ATV. He’s the goodwill ambassador that greets vacationers and informs them about the regulations and any advisories. Rip currents are a common occurrence on Assateague Island and Shelly wants to make sure folks know how to handle them before they enter the water.
As soon as I met him I knew this was going to be fun. His easy smile and outgoing personality made this shoot a breeze. He was super generous with his time and I had to reel myself in soon after the key photos were made. Shelly was a natural and I could have made portraits of him all day.
To create a balanced look I used the harsh midday sun for great rim and side lighting, and one studio strobe with a soft box as the main light. Here are a few selects that will rotate throughout the summer.
