Stretching across more than 600 acres of salt marsh wetlands, grassy recreational areas, and wildflower meadows, Liberty State Park offers miles of paths and walkways, including the waterfront Liberty Walk along the park's eastern edge. The park's open spaces and public gathering places provide visitors views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the New York City skyline and New York Harbor.
Located on 12-acre Liberty Island in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty was a gift of international friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States. It remains a universally-recognized symbol of political freedom and democracy and an icon of the New Jersey and New York metropolitan area.
The standing 151 feet tall, Lady Liberty was dedicated in 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.More recently, the copper clad statue was re-opened to the public in 2004 after a multi-million dollar renovation. Visitors can now look up into the center of the statue through a glass ceiling and walk out onto the Statue’s observation deck to enjoy panoramic views of Jersey City, New York City and the harbor.
